Interview: This 2018 the Lagos matchmaker wants to help you find your soulmate

Didi is a certified relationship coach and matchmaker in Lagos, Nigeria, an uncommon industry where only a few have been able to make impact. Imagine, telling a Nigerian parent you want to get certified as a relationship coach, lol! I bet not many will understand this and offer their blessings and full support.

The very first question that came to my mind on meeting Didi was, why did you decide to go ahead and getΒ  certified in this field? The answer wasn’t far fetched after hearing her speak for a while; Didi genuinely has a passion for matchmaking and she is determined to make it work as a business. Below is a summary of my brief interview with her, kindly read, share and comment. Thank you.

Tell us about yourself.

My name is Didi Warmate. I got my first degree in economics from Howard University, DC and my masters in international strategy from the University of St-Andrews Scotland.

Tell us about your business.

I am a relationship coach for “lagosmatchmaker” amongst other things. We aim to bring together serious-minded couples with similar goals in settling down.

Why matchmaking?

I recall how hard it was meeting someone when I moved back and realized that other people could be in the same situation. It wasn’t hard meeting people in general but it was hard meeting like-minded people who had a similar mindset that I had.

What inspired you to get certified in this area?

I always want to be the best in what I do. I realized that if I want to do this, then I should learn more about it, strategy-wise and learning to read people.

How has it been so far running this as a business?

It has been challenging as expected but it has been so fulfilling. I cannot explain the joy I feel when a couple informs you of their wedding plans. Its so exciting and you feel so glad that you had a hand in making that a reality.

What are the main challenges you have faced?

Trying to weed out unserious candidates can be time-consuming. Trying to reinform people that this is not a service for married individuals has been tough as well. Trying to focus on making everyone’s match successful has been very tasking

How have you been able to manage or overcome these challenges?

I learned to delegate. Its really hard letting someone handle a part you feel is important to the process but you have to let go to be able to make it work.

Can you share one or two testimonials from your work?

Due to our policy of privacy, it hurts but we do not list names or post pictures. This was an important aspect because we Nigerians are not fully ready for the visible matchmaking process but we do want the benefits it brings so this helps to let you eat your cake and have it.

Given the chance would you do this again?

A million times over. Funny enough I have been matchmaking since I was in secondary school so it’s always been something that brings me joy.

How have you been able to manage your time between running a business, family as well as a 9-5?

24hrs a day is never enough. I just plan carefully. I plan out my day hour by hour to try and get things done and crossed off my list.

What’s your vision for the “lagosmatchmaker” brand?

The vision is to get to a level of success. Success to me would be an increase in the number of couples that end up married in a year.

What advice would you give to anyone looking to venture into this industry?

It’s a passionate industry and I feel should be pursued if it’s something that brings you joy. We all feel ecstatic when we find love so imagine being the one to make that feeling possible for others out there. It’s exciting.

How can you be reached?
